KindleのPrimary Dictionaryを変更

Kindleを買おうと思ったキッカケの一つが、カーソルをその単語に合わせるだけで、画面の下に自動的に辞書の内容が表示されるという「Instant Lookup」機能でした。
届いてすぐこの機能を試して、「わー、出る、出る」と喜んでいましたが、そのうちだんだんと、モヤモヤするようになりました。


それは、Kindleに最初からついている、The New Oxford American Dictionaryというネイティブ用の英英辞典が、私にとって難しすぎたからです。
元々、英英辞典はあまり得意ではないのに、定義が難しくて、謎が深まるばかりでした。


調べてみると、Instant Lookupに使えるPrimary Dictionaryは変更可能ということがわかり、英語学習者用の Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionaryに変更してみました。円高だったし。。。

（手順はHome→Menu→Settings→Menu→Change Primary Dictionary）


今読んでる本で出てきたdialysisを引いてみたら、

dialysis

一方、デフォルトの辞書の定義はこんな感じ。

一日使ってみた結果、大分わかりやすくなった気もしますが、無理にKindleだけでの検索にこだわらずに、手元の電子辞書を使った方が、履歴も残っていいのかもしれないなーと思っているところです。


届いてから、3週間足らず。今日で3度目の充電でした。

Kindleで多読

今朝、Going My Way: 青空文庫のファイルを縦書きで PDF に変換してくれる、青空文庫 to Kindle Going My Way: 青空文庫のファイルを縦書きで PDF に変換してくれる、青空文庫 to Kindleで、読んで試してみました。


最初、変換したPDFファイルをdocumentフォルダに入れても、何の変化もなかったので、Amazon.comから更新ファイルをダウンロードして、Kindleのアップデートをしたら無事読めるようになりました。

ついでに、テキストファイルも放り込んでみたらすんなり読めたので、嬉しくなりました。テキストビューアーとして、使えたんですね。知らなかった。。。

これで当分読むものに困らない　かな。

Stanzaで多読

Reading

iPod touchを使い始めて2ヶ月。
Bylineでブログを読んだり、Evernoteに溜めこんであるテキストや、InstapaperにSaveしてあるWeb記事を読んだり、GoogleCalendarに英語で予定を書き込んでみたり、とても便利に使っています。


数日前にインストールしたStanzaという電子書籍リーダーアプリで、
Online Calalogを見ていたときに見つけたFeedbooks | Free eBooks and Best Sellersに、無料の読み物がたくさんあって、久しぶりに小躍りモードになりました。


ProjectGutenberg同様、著作権切れの本が並んでいます。これだけでも嬉しくて何冊もダウンロードしていましたが、PCでサイトを訪れてみたら、何とKindleバージョンも準備されていてビックリ。PDF、EPUBもありました。
早速、「The Curious Case of Benjamin Button」をダウンロードして、USBでつないでKindleに入れてみました。

Kindleを持ってなくても、Kindle for PCで読めるので、試してみるのにいいですね。
